Mary A. Zweifel, president and chief executive officer of Sheltering Arms Corporation, is retiring effective December 31, 2020.

Ms. Zweifel joined Sheltering Arms as chief operating officer in 2012 and became president and CEO in 2016. Prior to her tenure at Sheltering Arms, Ms. Zweifel served as CEO of Penn State Hershey Rehabilitation Hospital.

Zweifel’s success in her career can be attributed to her many contributions as a dedicated leader in the field of healthcare. Her accomplishments at Sheltering Arms include the implementation of an electronic health record system, support of clinical science research in outpatient clinics, and expansion of outpatient service offerings.

“We are so grateful for Mary’s years of service and all she has done to move the organization forward. She is leaving a positive legacy that will take us into the future,” said Ashby Hackney, chair of the board of directors.

Under Zweifel’s leadership, Sheltering Arms executed a legal joint venture agreement with VCU Health and navigated the design-build and planning process for the new Sheltering Arms Institute, a 114-bed innovative rehabilitation hospital that opened in June 2020.

The organization continued building upon its innovative healthcare model with advanced technology, evidence-based clinical practices, and research-driven programs, to help patients get better and experience more complete recoveries, by expanding the model to its outpatient services for a full-service continuum of care.

Zweifel’s steadfast guidance also successfully led Sheltering Arms through the COVID-19 pandemic, implementing a robust Telehealth program and protocols to keep patients and team members safe.

“I have been blessed and fortunate to work with a team committed to caring and the mission of Sheltering Arms,” Zweifel said. “None of this would have been possible without their hard work and support.”

Effective January 1, 2021, Dr. Dianne V. Jewell, PT, DPT, PhD, FAPTA, Director of Clinical Practice, Outcomes & Education at WebPT and long-time Sheltering Arms board member and former chair will serve as CEO.
