What is Post-COVID-19 Rehab?

Post-COVID-19 (coronavirus) rehabilitation at Sheltering Arms is an outpatient therapy program dedicated to the needs of people who have recently had coronavirus that perhaps resulted in hospitalization, intensive care unit admission or impairments related to mobility, cognition and/or activities of daily living.

Common symptoms after COVID-19 recovery include, but are not limited to:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Decreased energy
  • Difficulty performing daily tasks
  • Muscle weakness
  • Decreased balance
  • Difficulty focusing or worsening memory
  • New difficulty swallowing

What Services Are Part of This Program?

This program includes physical therapy, occupational therapy and/or speech therapy services. Patients will be evaluated for additional needs such as nutrition, medical psychology and physical medicine and rehab services as appropriate.

What is the Process for Post-COVID-19 Patients to be Seen?

Each patient will be screened by our call center representatives when making an appointment. When calling to schedule an appointment, let the representative know you need services because you’re recovering from COVID-19.

Patients may only be seen in person if they meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Two negative tests at least 24 hours apart and 21 days after symptom onset
  2. Three days symptom free* and 21 days after symptom onset

*Symptom-free is defined as the resolution of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications and improvement in respiratory symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath)

If the patient does not meet the criteria to come into the clinic, Telehealth visits are recommended until he or she meets the requirements.

Please note: All insurances now cover Telehealth services including Medicare and Medicaid.

Where Are These Services Offered?

Post-COVID-19 services are offered both in-person at our Hanover and Bon Air outpatient clinics and via Telehealth. Specific therapists have been trained with additional education to best meet the needs of these patients.

How do Patients Schedule an Appointment?

Patients need a physician’s referral to participate in this program. Physicians should complete a referral by checking ‘Evaluate and Treat,’ listing the patient’s diagnosis and including the recommended type of therapy. Patients will be identified in our system based on appointment type to ensure they are paired with the appropriate provider.
