125th Anniversary Celebrations

Anne Rutherford Lower delivered a fantastic banner lecture titled Sheltering Arms: A Legacy of Caring at the Virginia Historical Society. The lecture featured the coffee table book of the same name, which was published in honor of Sheltering Arms’ 125th anniversary this year. The book chronicles the organization’s growth from humble beginnings in a donated house in downtown Richmond, VA to a nationally recognized physical rehabilitation leader in 2014.

Mrs. Lower has been an ardent supporter of Sheltering Arms for decades, serving as a member of the board of directors, president of the board, member of the women’s council, and patient advocate. In 1989, Mrs. Lower authored a detailed centennial history of the organization and has served as the Sheltering Arms archivist since that time.

That’s not all… You have the unique opportunity to see this history “come to life” at a special anniversary exhibit, costumed interpretation and tour at the former Sheltering Arms Hospital (1894-1965).
