Swallowing Disorders

Swallowing comes naturally to most people, but if you are experiencing dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, it can not only be frustrating, but lead to further medical problems as well.

Dysphagia can result from medical conditions such as stroke, head injury, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis or other neurological impairments that directly affect your body’s swallowing mechanisms.

Symptoms include:

  • holding food or liquid in the mouth
  • difficulty initiating a swallow
  • coughing or choking while eating or drinking
  • a wet sounding voice after eating or drinking
  • unexplained fever and/or respiratory problems

Speech-language pathologists at Sheltering Arms specialize in diagnosing and treating swallowing disorders, which can result in a greatly improved quality of life.

One of the advanced techniques they use is VitalStim®. This neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy is approved by the FDA and uses small electrical currents to stimulate the muscles used for swallowing. The repetition of the electrical currents and training sessions with a skilled speech-language pathologist help to re-educate the muscles to begin swallowing again.
