Back Injury

Your back functions as the central link of a kinetic chain that includes the head, jaw, neck, upper back, shoulders and arms at one end and the legs and feet at the other. The back affects nearly every other part of the body, so even the slightest back pain can interrupt your daily activities.

There are many effective options for treating back pain and preventing its recurrence. The relief of this pain, however, depends in large part on its cause. Sheltering Arms offers an array of services to relieve back pain, typically beginning with the least intensive options, including activity modification and physical therapy. If pain persists, a specially trained Sheltering Arms physician may recommend and provide selective spinal injections. Surgery is typically the last option, used only when necessary.

Due to ongoing research that expands the understanding of spinal function and spinal injuries, our ability to provide successful treatment continues to improve. Our physical therapists, nurses, medical psychologists and physicians will work closely with you to relieve your back pain as quickly and thoroughly as possible.

Foot & Ankle Injury

The foot and ankle are amazingly complex, with many bones, joints, muscles and ligaments functioning together to bear your weight, help you balance and propel you as you walk, run or jump. Because of the many moving parts, foot and ankle injuries are common and can unfortunately impair your ability to do all of these things.

Common causes of foot and ankle pain include:

  • sprains/strains
  • ankle instability
  • plantar fasciitis
  • tendonitis and tendon repair
  • shin splints
  • arthritis

Physical therapists at Sheltering Arms have expertise in the intricate anatomy of the foot and ankle and can help relieve your pain. Your therapist will work with you to determine the cause of your pain and develop a treatment plan to regain strength and range of motion, and get you back on your feet again as safely and efficiently as possible.

Joint Replacement

Following joint replacement surgery, physical rehabilitation can play an important role in helping you decrease pain and increase range of motion. Depending on your unique needs, you may transition to a rehabilitation hospital to begin the recovery process after surgery, go home and receive home healthcare, or come to an outpatient therapy clinic for regular appointments.
Our skillful physical and occupational therapists work with many patients with joint replacements and understand the unique challenges of recovery following surgery. A physical therapist can help with exercises to strengthen the muscles around the joint and work on regaining motion in the new joint. An occupational therapist will work on safely mastering the motions necessary to live independently, such as bending and lifting. These clinicians, along with our physicians, provide insight and understanding about your situation and its effects on your daily life.

Following clinical therapy services, your therapists may recommend that you continue with an exercise program to maintain the positive effects of therapy. Click here to learn about the fitness and wellness services offered at Sheltering Arms, or call 804-764-1000 for more information about what service is most appropriate for you.

Knee Injury

Your knee is a relatively simple joint that is required to perform the complicated job of providing mobility while bearing considerable amounts of weight. While walking, your knees will bear up to three to five times your body weight. While climbing stairs, the force can increase to seven times the weight.

A human knee sustains this force by a compact structure of bone and cartilage, supported by muscles and ligaments. When your knee is overstressed, these structures can break down and result in knee injury.

There is no quick cure for a knee injury, however, a physical therapist can help you restore maximum function, manage pain and prevent recurrent injuries. Your physical therapist will work on flexibility exercises and provide a home exercise program to continue the progress made during therapy.

Post Polio Syndrome

Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) is a condition that can strike polio survivors ten to forty years after recovery. PPS is a very slow progressing condition, marked by long periods of stability and caused by the death of individual nerve terminals in the motor units that remain after the initial polio attack.

Symptoms include:

  • musculoskeletal pain
  • increased fatigue
  • weakness
  • declining function
  • difficulty recovering from a fall

Physical therapists can work with you on flexibility, balance and muscle strength and control.  The therapy aims to limit and slow the effects of PPS and reduce the risk for falls. Physicians work closely with the therapists to oversee progress and make recommendations for further care. Medical psychology may also be helpful with emotional adjustment to the life changes you are facing as a result of PPS.

They also work on flexibility exercises and provide home exercise programs to continue the progress made during therapy. Speech Conditions

Speech is one of the primary ways that humans communicate with our environment. Speech and language disorders refer to problems in communication and range from impairment of articulation, sounds, fluency or voice to cognitive issues that can impact your ability to understand the use of spoken and written language. These cognitive issues may also impair safety and judgment in activities of daily living.

Communication difficulties can be caused by a number of conditions, including neurological disorders, brain injury and stroke. Dysarthria (poorly articulated speech), aphasia (impaired expression or comprehension of written or spoken language) and apraxia (motor planning difficulties) are some of the most common speech and communication problems.

The best treatment for a speech, language or cognitive-communication disorder is early intervention by a speech-language pathologist. Learn more about our Speech & Language Therapy Program by clicking the button below.

Swallowing Disorders

Swallowing comes naturally to most people, but if you are experiencing dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) it can not only be frustrating, but lead to further medical problems as well.

Dysphagia can result from medical conditions such as stroke, head injury, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or other neurological impairments that directly affect your body’s swallowing mechanisms.

Symptoms include:

  • holding food or liquid in the mouth
  • difficulty initiating a swallow
  • coughing or choking while eating or drinking
  • a wet sounding voice after eating or drinking
  • unexplained fever and/or respiratory problems

Speech-language pathologists at Sheltering Arms specialize in diagnosing and treating swallowing disorders, which can result in a greatly improved quality of life.

One of the advanced techniques they use is VitalStim®. This neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy is approved by the FDA and uses small electrical currents to stimulate the muscles used for swallowing. The repetition of the electrical currents and training sessions with a skilled speech-language pathologist help to re-educate the muscles to begin swallowing again.
