The Total Concussion Care Program at Sheltering Arms is dedicated to comprehensive management and treatment of concussions from baseline through recovery.
Baseline testing is beneficial for athletes, as it helps in determining an individual's normal levels of balance and brain functioning prior to engaging in athletic activity. It provides important information, which can be compared with results of similar assessments in the event of a suspected concussion during the season. The comparison of baseline test results to post-injury results can help in identifying severity of injury and making critical decisions regarding safely returning to play and other daily activities.
Evaluation & Treatment
Concussions are complex injuries, which can result in both physical and cognitive issues. Because every situation is different, our clinical experts work together to provide individualized treatment for each patient, managing the concussion through complete recovery.
- Physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians thoroughly evaluate patients and provide medical oversight of the concussion treatment, including medication management as needed.
- Our physical therapists are neurovestibular experts and can help address dizziness, headaches and balance impairments related to concussion. They conduct comprehensive assessments and provide evidence-based treatments that help retrain the brain to understand and perform in complex environments.
- Medical psychologists provide neurocognitive testing, such as ImPACTTM, to help make recommendations for accommodations when returning to school or work. They can also offer expertise and coping strategies for anxiety and stress management.
- Occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists offer treatments to address persistent difficulty with organization, memory and/or concentration.
For student athletes looking to return to school, sports and other daily activities, our clinical team employs the coordinated Return to Learn/Return to Play Model of Care.
