Balance/Vestibular Disorder

Balance is an integral part of daily life, and one that most people take for granted. There are a number of conditions, however, that may impair the sense of balance and contribute to dizziness or falls. Simply growing older is an inevitable and primary cause of balance disorders. It is estimated that one out of four people over the age of 65 will fall during the next year. Injury and disease can also trigger balance disorders.

At Sheltering Arms, our physical therapists can help you pinpoint the underlying causes of your balance disorder and learn to cultivate and maintain higher levels of strength, flexibility and endurance in ways that feel safe and secure.  Your therapist may determine that you could benefit from therapy with the innovative SMART Balance Master®.  This interactive technology allows your therapist to control the surface where you stand as well as your visual environment during therapy sessions to systematically evaluate and address each component of your balance control. Your therapist can then make adjustments to the exercises and environment as your balance and capabilities improve.

Our physicians also specialize in treating patients with conditions that lead to balance problems and instability. A regular exercise program is helpful as well. Memberships to the Sheltering Arms fitness centers and warm water therapeutic pool are open to everyone in the community and are a wonderful way to improve strength and flexibility, and reduce risk for falls.
